I'm in the processes of moving my blog from LJ to here. Most links still redirect you to LJ, but I'm working on fixing that.

The main language for each category is shown in the brackets.

This list is sadly not perfectly updated. I'm... not working on it, but I will get around to it at some point.

they called from the clinic today. I have an appointment on Wednesday.

I'm really drunk.

And when I turn on the TV  TLD is on the TV.

I'm... I'm... fuck it.

I'm drunk and I'm seeing things.

EDIT 20200827: I have no memory of writing this post...
solrosan: (Default)
This morning when I should have been working instead I started archiving my blog from 12 years ago. I know I have an exported, completely jumbled file somewhere, but I can't find it anymore, so now I'm doing it manually. (I've lost my log in details to the blog a long time ago.) I started the blog when I moved abroad and updated it daily for a year, then when I got home I was so used to it that I continued for another two years. (Then I found fandom and depression so...)

So now I'm reliving one of the most formative time of my life which is... uncomfortable and exciting.

What makes it fun though is that the blogging platform has changed all the not-logged-in commentors names to Anonymous. So here I sit trying to guess if it's my parents or my classmates heckling me about food choices, grammar and TV-shows.It's a weird time.

Not all that long ago I wrote one of those bitter posts about hits and kudos and comments (you know the type) and because of that I just want to say that I'm having the complete opposite feeling right now.

In the last five days I've posted three fics (I've only written one during this time, the other were just waiting for a last read-over and a title). I can't tell you how many times I've checked my AO3 dash during this time, but I can tell you that I've been happy (almost giddy) every time I did. There has been 0 influx in the numbers of hits, kudos or comments I receive, but damn it if I'm not just so satisfied and content with things as they are right now.

This isn't because I'm somehow better at not comparing myself with others right now or whatever. (Because I'm an idiot and recently did just this...) This is just... how it is! This has been a good few days in fandom for me, and I thought I should write that down so that I'll remember it when I reach another down.

Also, just because I can, here are my three first fics of 2020!

bombs and pets and the things in between (Kingsman, James Bond (Craig movies), Eggsy/Q, Teen and up)
The first time they meet is ordinary. As is the second, the third, the fourth… Actually, so are most of them. Most of the times they meet are ordinary even if so many other things in their lives are not. Except it isn’t ordinary, because it’s them.

The Civilian Who Loves Me
(Kingsman, Eggsy/Jamal, Teen and up)
It's not easy living with a civilian, ask Eggsy. He knows all too well how it feels having to go home to a partner time and time again and try to come up with new believable, reasons why a tailor has to leave the country on two hours notice. Luckily, Merlin knows it's not a walk in the park to live with a Kingsman agent either, and he has ideas on how to help out.

Love Leaves a Memory (Black Sails, James/Thomas(/Miranda), Teen and up)
James' first night at the plantation, Thomas asks about Miranda. It takes months for James to tell him everything.

It’s time to wrap this up in traditional manner, a little later than usual due to me not being home for the last two weeks (ish).

So, here we go! 2019 was the year I...

  • ...became a OTW Translation Volunteer!
  • ...closed @sherlockladylove
    • again, thank you all so much <3
  • ...tried to start using Pillowfort
    • (it’s worked so-so so far)
  • ...tried even harder to wake my DW from its slumber
    • (this also worked a bit so-so)
  • ...bought a note book I had planned to write all the “about solrosan” things in
    • (I stopped after two notes)
  • ...started to watch Black Sails
  • ...did an honest attempt to watch Bron
  • ...felt an incredible loss when Game of Thrones ended
  • ...caught up with Elementary
  • ...spent an entire day running around Berlin with the James Bond theme in the background
  • ...made a serious attempt to read and comment on old fics
  • ...bought 2 kg of yarn
  • ...reached 100 published fics on AO3
  • ...quoted Game of Thrones on an exam
    • (and then removed it)
  • ...went to Livrustkammaren on opening day
    • ...and then about 10 more times
    • ...and getting asked to leave once because they were closing
  • ...because of above wrote slash about The Novel
  • ...watched too much football for my own comfort due to Feminist Reasons
  • ...thought about watching Doctor Who because of Good Omens
  • ...posted smut!
  • ...got really emotional when voting in the EU election and made lots of suffragette moodboards because of it (x, x)

  • ...called @spectralarchers after walking out of Endgame
  • ...participated in two fandom challenges

Some stats! During 2019...

    • there are some tumblr fics as (here and here) well, but I don’t have the energy to find them and count them and you know...
  • ...Take My Measurement Anew has by far the most kudos (117)
    • it also has the most hits, comments and bookmarks
  • ...I posted 16 edits on solrosan and 17 on agentsandbutterflies
  • ...this post got the most notes
  • ...interactions were generally low, it seems

Why are you in the fandom(s) that you're currently active in? What makes you participate in some fandoms but not others?

If I'm to explain why I'm in the fandoms I am I can give pretty straight forward answers.

Sherlock -- I loved the show when I watched it, then when I discovered fandom about 6 months later my life was a mess and in finding fandom I also found a word to describe myself that I had searched for for a long time. The Sherlock fandom filled a gaping hole in my life. The Sherlock fandom gave me a purpose for many years. I cannot overstate the importance of the Sherlock fandom and the timing in my life.

MCU -- I've always been a casual fan of superheroes (and I mean all of them, though I'm growing tired of Spiderman so fast it's not even funny) but then Clint Barton, one of my best fandom friend's fav, turned out to have kids and Natasha was an integrated part of that family. It wasn't until I had written a few thousand words about it that I realised that the reason I probably got this invested this fast is because that's the relationship structure I want. I want to be Natasha to the Bartons.

Kingsman -- Do you have any idea how much fun it is to actually know stuff in a fandom? Like really know it? Without research? You know how fucking rare that is for people not from the UK or US? Any idea how much more fun that makes it? Honestly, I just came here to write some meta to help people who might want to write somewhat accurate fics about Eggsy as a prince of Sweden, but I realised that I was about the only one who wanted to do that and it was too much fun to be able to use just being fucking Swedish and knowing shit about Swedish royal history to not stick around.

But then when I turn it around.... why NOT this or that fandom, then it gets harder.

For example, I love Criminal Minds. Always have. From first episode to latest episode. The way that show get my heart raising. The way I'm on the edge of my metaphorical seat sometimes. The way I care for a lot of the characters. It evokes an emotional response in me that not even Sherlock has managed. I have never cried watching Sherlock, but I have cried a lot to Criminal Minds.

The West Wing? Sure, I had no idea what fandom was when I first watched it, but nope.

Fröken Fridmans Krig? It's in Swedish, so I think that might be the reason?

Star Trek (AOS)? The first movie gave my first OTP. I adore Spock and Uhura together. The first movie got me buying a TOS box, I was invested enough to throw money at the franchise... but the fandom? No. For some reason. It's not like it's because the fandom at large is against my OTP, I have a tendency to be drawn to women who break up popular mlm ships... Mary Morstan, Laura Barton, Princess Tilde, Nyota Uhura... So there's obviously something else.

Good Omens? My latest binge, because Tumblr, lbr. I love this fandom. They seem to have so much fun! And I love watching it from afar. I've even read two fics (old Sherlock authors coming back to play and I have missed their writing so much) but I have no interest what so ever to engage.

So... why are you in the fandoms you're in? Or why aren't you in the ones you aren't?

Last night I walked home crying in the rain. It was a bit after midnight (I sent the "I'm home" message to people around 1 a.m.) and I'd had too much beer on too little pasta, after a 50 hours work week. It was a terrible way to end an otherwise pretty decent evening. I cried for the same reason I always cry these days when I've had some alcohol.

So there I am, drunk, crying, and feeling pretty damn pathetic and ridiculous for still crying over the same thing, and yet I keep thinking that if this was a movie, this would be such a cliché that people would ask me to cut it out. Woman walking home alone in the rain, crying. The writer in me found it strangely liberating that no matter how overused and tired a trope is, they actually do still happen in real life and if I want to I can use them!

And that's what I'm going to focus on when I think about last night.

So.... I've been a bit busy lately, turning my flat into a proper mess by buying a new sofa and having to rearrange just about everything! (My flat is so tiny that I'm constantly impressed of all the things it holds. It becomes even more evident when something as huge as a sofa is introduced.) This has put me a bit behind on this, but now everything is stored away and I can catch up!

Day 7 -- Try something new! )

Day 8 – Post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created )

Day 9 – Commit an act of kindness )

Day 10 – Create a fanwork )
I will do the other ones separately, because the require a bit more thought process.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Okay... so... here we go!
  • Podfic -- I'd love for someone to make a podfic out of one of my fics. I know that a lot of the fics might need a proper SPAG-check before that would be doable, but yeah, I'd love a podfic.
  • Fake book covers for the Eating us Alive series -- Or cover singular. This series haunts me (in a good way) and though the first parts are early works that I sometimes cringe at I'm so proud of the emotional labour that went into that series.
  • A gif of one of the texing conversations in the SMS series -- I've thought about doing this myself, but I'm not skilled enough at photoshop. This one would just be hilarious.
  • Fanart -- Of anything any fic, really. I'd worship the ground you walk on.

All that said, people have through the years been very nice to me and I've been very lucky!

It became three in each place where I'm active(ish).

Dreamwidth

[community profile] sherlock_bbc
[personal profile] sherlockbbc_fic (aka the Kink Meme)
[community profile] 221b_recs

In order, these are a community where all types of BBC Sherlock content is welcome (you can post fic, art, links, meta, etc), a prompt meme for BBC Sherlock, and a fanwork rec community for all types of Holmesanian works. They have one thing in common: their LJ-sisters/clones/originals were all a huge part of my very earliest fandom experience. I love them a lot because of nostalgia and how much they have meant to me.

They are not as active as they once were (and I admit that I've done very little to help out here) but hopefully they can become more active again if more people start using DW again. I'm hopeful!

Tumblr
femslashrevolution -- a multifandom femslash blog that's fighting the good fight and is very active even after female presenting nipples were banned
Rejected Princesses -- artist and writer who draws comics (and publishes books) about forgotten women in history
Salt of the AO3 -- the wailing wall of fanfic writing

Pillowfort

Full disclosure, I have no idea how communities work on PFIO yet, but have some anyway! Since I don't quite know how they work, I can't really say if they are good or bad either, but I'm putting them here in hopes of finding more people over there!

SherlockLadyLove -- for those BBC Sherlock fans who like femslash and support the female characters in general
221B_Baker_St -- an Holmesainian community
Kingsman -- a Kingsman comminuty

...I really butchered the formatting on this one.

solrosan: (Default)
So, day 3 of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Dang it! This one is hard. There's so much to choose from. There's Sherlock, obviously, and the Ritchie movies that made me interested enough in ACD's detective to watch Sherlock to start with. Harry Potter definitely deserves an honourable mention. As does The Hobbit, seeing how a functionality we've developed is colloquially called Bilbo. There's The Thorn birds, first book I drew fanart for. Vicomte de Bragelonne, the first book I cried while reading...

...but the first thing that popped into my head was this clip and that's why I'm picking it.

And if the video won't work, here is a link

This is a clip from The West Wing, s03e17, Stirred. It wraps up one of the episode's many subplots within subplots, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman has been punished with given the task to find a person to put on the next stamp while Donna thinks her teacher who is about to retire should be on the stamp. Or a day. Or at least a proclamation. Josh brushes her off, because really...

These things happens all. the. time. in this show. There's a subplot to a subplot to a subplot and the President doesn't like peas and they will now lose the election. That's one of the reasons I love this show. The chaos feel real and the level of closure for each plot line varies a lot because, well, that's life. Not everything is tied up in a neat bow. Not everything has an ending at all. So many things just... disappear along the way while more important shit is going on. Like giving your teacher a proclamation.

So just the fact that this plot line gets an ending besides Josh going "Eh, no." at the idea as we expect, we get this scene. It comes as a surprise to the viewer just as it comes as a surprise to Donna. The surprise is then doubled (for viewer and Donna) when it doesn't end with Josh's memo, but that the President understands how important it is and cares so much about the secretary of his Deputy Chief of Staff that he's set this up. It's heartwarming and not at all why I picked this.

I picked this scene because this is the scene that, without fail, makes me cry. I can't even retell this without starting to cry at "I'm in the Oval Office with the President of the United States and it's because of you." (Typing that, after JUST having watched it to make sure the wording was correct makes me cry.) It's been years since I first watched it, but this scene still breaks me. In a good way.

I don't even know what it is about it. If it's the idea of small people ending up in big places. If it's the ordinary in the middle of the extraordinary. If it's how we can all set people on paths in life that are beyond our wildest dreams. If it's the opportunity to thank someone who's important to you. I don't know.  I just know that if I need a good cry, like you do sometimes, I put on this clip and I watch a small town girl no one every expected greatness from, call her teacher and tell her that she inspired her to get on the path that would lead her to the Oval Office.

(and now I'm crying again.)

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Let's see...

By His Dirty Hands We Know Him by [personal profile] anarfea  (BBC Sherlock, M/M, Mature, Graphic Description of Violence, Completed)

Mycroft and Greg are getting serious, and Greg is starting to ask serious questions about the difficult and sometimes unethical decisions Mycroft has made. Mycroft breaks things off before Greg can find out the darkest secret in his past--which is about to catch up to him.

This is a really good, believable backstory for Mycroft and about what he did before he became the enigmatic character we see on the show. Anarfea has done a great job tying this to real events happening during The Troubles and show the... darker grey areas of what a someone in Mycroft's position would most likely have to deal with. I love the research she's done for this fic and I'll admit she had me hooked on the Author's Note alone, but even if you're not (like me) a sucker for fics with proper ties to real life events, this is an amazing fic. Her Lady Smallwood is fantastic and the ending is rare for fanfics, but it's executed so well. Then, if you after reading the fic is interested in the actual event, she provides links to the research material in the end! (Seriously, what more can you want?)

The Ink On Our Skin Stains Us Black  by [personal profile] insanereddragon (Kingsman, M/M/M, Mature, No Warning Apply, WIP)

Eggsy tapped his pencil a couple of times on the sketchbook, eyes unfocused as he thought. Looking up, he caught and held Harry's eyes. “Do you trust me?”

Harry looked back at Eggsy and a snap of electricity seemed to spark between them. “Yes,” he replied without hesitation.

From his chair next to Harry, Merlin raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Harry didn’t trust people. Life as a spy had ingrained in him a general distrust of most things. When someone did gain his trust, it was never fast, never with so much genuine emotion bleeding through. There was more lingering there under the surface, more than just Harry trusting Eggsy to come up with the right design. At the thought, Merlin felt a warmth in his chest he had not been expecting.

-–

The tattoo!au where Merlin and Harry are a couple, Eggsy becomes Merlin’s new tattoo artist, and the boys all refuse to talk to each other about the attraction that grows between them.

I like this fic so much that I can't properly tell you how much I do. I might also have a problem understanding exactly why this went straight to my heart the way it did, but it did and now it's there and it will never leave me. (When rereading this before posting I realise that I probably should point out that all of this is a good thing!) It ticks a lot of my boxes, though! Tattoo!AU, check. Polyship, check. Established relationship, check. Slowburn, check. It's a WIP, but is a ride worth being on! It's not a complete civilian AU, Merlin and Harry are both still in Kingsman in the roles they hold in the movies. (Or movie, the fic started when there was no TGC so the second movie is irrelevant.) Red does a wonderful with the world building and pulling you in by photos, maps and additional info in the notes at the end of almost every chapter. Also: concealer. If you read it, you'll understand!

[Fandom stats] Gender representation in movies vs. movie fanworks by [personal profile] destinationtoast

There are a lot of discussions in fandom about gender representation in fanworks, and whether fandom is shortchanging female characters. Over the last several years, I’ve seen various debates and wondered about the underlying numbers. So I went and found some… and then got slightly obsessed analyzing them.

These analyses is not going to be able to address some kinds of questions, many of which can’t be answered with numbers. But I hope to answer some questions, and add more data and new nuances to discussions.

Ending a bit different, but Toast so much work into what she does and deserves all the cred! (Also, since this is a multi-fandom event I thought everyone could find this interesting.) The name of the work and Toast's own summary explains pretty well what this is, this is an attempt to look at and answer the question about gender representation in movies vs. fanworks of those movies. It's about 80 slides + explanatory text about statistics divided into 7 chapters on AO3 but please, please, pleeeeease don't let that scare you. This is so good and well presented. And as I said, the work put into this is mind blowing. If you want to start with something smaller or you get interested and want to read more, Toast has made almost 90 of these! (And I know that some of these analysis are linked from Wikipedia. Just saying.) Go! Read! Marvel in what you can show with numbers!

Bonus: The Silmarillion Rewrite by [personal profile] j_quadrifrons

The Silmarillion
Translated from the Elvish by Professor J.R.R. Tolkien
Translated from Professor Tolkien's Handwriting by Christopher Tolkien
Translated Lovingly from the Tokienish by jenavira

Again, exactly what it says it is: a rewrite of The Silmarillion for all of us who don't really feel up to rereading (or reading for the first time) Tolkien's English translation. I'm half-way through and forever grateful.

Also, because can't make a rec list without mentioning:
Bandit Queen by [personal profile] lbmisscharlie (BBC Sherlock, F/M, Teen, Choose Not To Use Warnings)

She works for them – with them – both, and they each offer her countless opportunities. For Jim, she’s a gunhand and something like a friend, for Mycroft, she’s a brain, a processor, and occasionally a useful pretty face. This arrangement works fine until Jim has to go and do something stupid.

I'm going to rec this fic until I'm absolute sure everyone in the Sherlock fandom (+ some more people) have read this. It's post series 1, it's Anthea (or you know, not!Anthea) and the last line of this fic is the best last line I've seen. Ever. It's... perfect. Read it.

Summary: On 29 March 2017 Anthea shows up at Martin's door with their daughter and an overnight bag, because earlier that day, the signed letter invoking Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union was delivered to the President of the European Council and started the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU.

Notes: Why, yes, I do write the most boring summaries in the world! Thank you so much for noticing!

Many thanks to [personal profile] zedille who helped me see some of the storytelling issues with this one, and who has a never ending patience with my lack of proper structure insight and English. I'm becoming increasingly better at listening to her ;) (I hope...)
