And I wouldn’t say that they really have to take sides, but when a couple breaks up it’s inevitable that sides are created and I think John just wants to make sure that Sherlock is there for Mycroft if he needs it and perhaps even protect him a bit for a change. (Sherlock needs to have a black-and-white world at time ;) )
